Wild, Watchful, and Built for the Ends of the Earth My first RhodiClicks coloring book began with the elusive capybara. For my next adventure, I headed much farther south to meet an animal perfectly suited to one of the wildest landscapes on Earth: the guanaco. Guanacos roam the open plains, deserts, and mountains of South America, from the dry landscapes of the Atacama to the windswept reaches of Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego. They are relatives of camels, llamas, alpacas, and vicuñas, but unlike llamas and alpacas, guanacos are truly wild. I encountered these beautiful animals while traveling through South America. With their long necks, oversized ears, and alert expressions, guanacos seem almost delicate at first glance. Don't be fooled. They are remarkably tough animals, adapted to high elevations, bitter cold, fierce winds, and landscapes where food and water can be scarce. And they can move! A guanaco can run at speeds of around 35 miles per hour, an important skill when one of its natural predators is the puma. Young guanacos, called chulengos, are especially impressive. They can stand shortly after birth and are soon able to follow the herd. My wildlife encounters and photographs inspire illustrations designed to be colored, while the surrounding pages tell the animal's story.
