Behind Capybara Adventures

The first RhodiClicks coloring book began with an animal that seems to know exactly how to move through the world without rushing and, in our case, without being seen. Capybaras are social, gentle-looking, wonderfully expressive, and surprisingly elusive, making them a natural choice for a travel-inspired coloring book.

The story begins in South America, among the quiet landscapes surrounding Jose Ignacio, Uruguay. With its open skies, peaceful waterways, and wildlife all around us, this beautiful corner of Uruguay became the inspiration for Capybara Adventures and, ultimately, the beginning of the RhodiClicks coloring book collection.

Why Start With A Capybara?

Capybaras invite curiosity. They are familiar enough to seem friendly, yet unusual enough to inspire a sense of discovery. For a coloring book, that balance is perfect: the animal becomes a character while remaining connected to a very real place and experience.

There is also a bit of irony behind choosing the capybara as the star of my first book. During our time in Uruguay, we were constantly on the lookout for them. We woke early in the mornings hoping to catch a glimpse of one and listened carefully whenever we were near the water. Several times, we heard capybaras scurrying through the vegetation and splashing into the river just before we could see them. They were always one step ahead of us.

One day, while returning to the hacienda pictured above, a storm began rolling in. The clouds gathering over the landscape were so unusual and dramatic that I had to stop and capture the moment. It became one of those unexpected travel photographs that tells its own story: we may not have found the capybaras that day, but Uruguay gave us something else worth remembering.

So, I have a confession: the capybara remains the one animal featured on RhodiClicks that I have not yet photographed in the wild. Because our elusive friends refused to pose for my camera, the capybara photographs on this page come from other sources rather than my own collection. I hope that someday I can return and replace them with photographs of my own.

Perhaps that makes the capybara an even better beginning for RhodiClicks. It is a reminder that travel does not always go according to plan, and sometimes what you almost see becomes part of the story.
